Project title: How do users share information on WhatsApp in Malaysia and Singapore
By Dr Niki Cheong, Lecturer in Digital Culture and Society, King’s College London (Profile here)
Hello and thank you for your interest in my research project looking into online information circulating on WhatsApp in Malaysia and Singapore. My name is Niki and I’m a lecturer at King’s College London, which is funding this project.
Currently, I am in Southeast Asia to conduct focus groups with participants born in or before 1964 (about 61 years old and above) to find out more about what kinds of information they encounter and share on Whatsapp, and what else they use the chat app for. I will also ask some questions about your smartphone use.
I am happy to travel to a location mutually convenient for the both of us. Each session will take between 1 and 1.5 hours. I would be very keen to include you in my study if you are:
- Based in either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur/Selangor
- An English speaker
- Aged around 61 and above (born in or before 1964).
For more information about the project, please read this Participant Information Sheet. Before the interview begins, you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to participate in the project. Following the interview, all data collected (recordings) will be anonymised at transcription stage. Research data will be processed based on UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For your time and travel, a voucher will be offered to you following the end of the interview.
If you’re happy to participate, please leave either your email address or Whatsapp number in the form below. If you have further inquiries, you can contact me via email (niki.cheong @ kcl.ac.uk).
Many thanks and hope to have you participate in my project!
