Niki Cheong

Niki Cheong is a journalist, actor and social media advocate. He is also known as The Bangsar Boy, a reference to his fortnightly column in Malaysia’s leading English daily, The Star. Niki is Deputy Editor of R.AGE, The Star’s youth portal and shares a weekly column in the section on social media called What The Tweet.

He holds two degrees – BA in Media and Information (specialising in Print Journalism and Film & TV) as well as BA Internet Studies (Thesis title: Malaysiakini.com: New(s) Media and Democracy in Malaysia) – both of which he obtained from Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia. The final year of his first degree was completed thanks to a scholarship from the University.

In 2009, Niki was named Martell VSOP’s Rising Media Personality and named one of August Man magazine’s inaugural Men of the Year for his contributions to the local social media scene. He has given several talks on journalism, blogging and social media alongside other speakers including former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandez, activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and blogging sensation Kenny Sia among others.
