Talking blogging

Events

So yesterday, I was at the PJ Challenge ’09 Bloggers ‘K’arnival at Jaya 33. The event was organised by Kaspersky, MBPJ and the ABM (Association of Backpackers Malaysia). There were several events happening at the same time, but I got there early for the Blog 411 session, of which I was one of the speakers.

I’ve not attended a blogger’s event in a while, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It all turned out mostly well – met some new people, reacquainted with people I’ve met before and caught up with old friends like Marcus (who was speaking at the Blog 101 sessions) and JasonMumbles, who very kindly took some photos for me!

I gave the fourth talk, and I talked about mainstream media embracing blogging and how I juggled between my commitments as a journalist with my passion for being a blogger. What content goes on the blog, and what goes into your articles? And how I use my blog to drive readers to my articles and vice versa. Not sure if anyone found it interesting, but it sure got me thinking a lot when I was coming out with my presentation!

The biggest thrill of the day, however, would be in the introduction of Kenny Sia‘s talk (pic below, in case you don’t recognise him ;P) when he told everyone – it’s on record! – that he got the idea to start blogging after reading one by his friend – me! Haha We went to Uni together, and got along well when we were elected representatives of the Student Guild. How’s that for tumpang glamour?!

I also got the chance to meet Gloson, the 11-year-old whiz kid who I had befriended on Twitter. He was kind enough to leave me an autographed copy of his new Poetry Book which he is selling to raise funds for his future education. He didn’t come up to say hi at first because he was too busy trying to win a laptop by liveblogging (he didn’t win but instead, my cousin’s boyfriend MoJosh did) but his mum passed the book over.

Gloson won during the KO Competition (pictured below being questioned by AmandaChoe who was one of the emcees and speakers as well) though, answer questions about the event faster than the rest so he finally has a nice laptop to use now!

By the time the event ended, I was ready to go chat with JasonMumbles about an article we have asked him to write for R.AGE. Look out for it soon, it’s about bloggers (no pressure, Jason! heh) Before that though, it was the customary goodbyes. We also did a lot of camwhoring (as expected) and I took one with Smashpop (p/s He’s not that much tall, he tip-toed for this picture – idiot :P ), another friend of mine who spoke at the event.

Then a few people came up to take photos with us – we were famous bloggers wor – and a few asked for autographs. I wasn’t sure they wanted mine. I was standing next to Smashpop and I suspect they wanted his and since I was there, it was only polite to ask me also? :P So I wrote notes to them saying things like: “I’m not Smashpop” and “It’s his autograph you want!” All in jest of course, I hope no one took it personally!

Me and Smashpop

There’s been many other blogs around writing about the event so for a review (hard for me to do it, since I was part of the talks – I’m not that syok sendiri, mmkay) so just do a Google search for it. :)
