And to think that barely a year ago, most Malaysians would probably not be able to name an assemblyman other than their local one.

Now, after the whole Perak debacle (which, sadly is still not resolved), another assemblyman – PKR’s Elizabeth Wong – is in the limelight. And, as far as I’m concerned, for the wrong reasons!

After The Sun carried it on their front page yesterday (and The Malay Mail later that morning), you would have expected the story of “nude” pictures of Elizabeth making it to the front page of almost all the dailies.

No one knows anything for sure. What we do know is this: Elizabeth has confirmed that the pictures are indeed of her (she has lodge a police report and given her statement to the police to help investigations), the cops were due to question an ex-boyfriend “said” to have taken the pictures and that Elizabeth has offered to resign from her position as Selangor executive council member and Bukit Lanjan assemblyman (although PKR has asked her to hold off from resigning just yet). She also claims that the pictures were taken without her consent.

I, for one, am horrified that this has happened. I stand by the principle that everyone has the right to privacy. Whether or not the pictures were taken without consent, the mere act of spreading it should be condemned – whatever the reasons.

Of course, there are lot of speculations. The most immediate reaction is that this is politically motivated. I do not know for sure, but I applaud the many politicians from all political divides – including Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Teresa Kok, Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun – who have come out to condemn this act.

However former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Khir Toyo had called for her resignation, stating that it was a moral issue.

By who’s values, Datuk Seri? What’s more, he is making such calls and comments based on what I’m assuming are the same reports we have all read, which means that there are little details. So to make such a call on presumption is pretty low. Trying to score political points as March approaches, I suppose. Simply apalling.

Whether she ends up resigning or not, is up to her. I’m sure she knows what is best for her, her career and the organisations that she represent. I just hope that none of her decisions are made under pressure or duress.

I hope that Elizabeth finds strength in this trying time, and would be able to come out of it unscathed. I don’t know her or her work – as she isn’t my assemblyman or MP – but no one should ever be subjected to such despicable action.
