Cisco Fatty: Watch what you Tweet

Rantings

Okay, I don’t know how true this story is (you know the kinds of hoaxes you find on the Internet) but there’s a good lesson to take from it.

You know how they say that the Internet has widened the public sphere like never before? And how one of the most common disccusions re: Facebook is whether or not to confirm your boss as a friend?

Well, this girl – Connor S. Riley – apparently got a job offer from Cisco and Tweeted about it. It read:

Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.

To which, Tim Levad, from Cisco tweeted back:

Who is the hiring manager. I’m sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web.

You can find the full story here at Cisco Fatty, but I first heard about it via a retweet from @MalaysianLife. It seems authentic, but I couldn’t find the alleged reply tweet on @timmylevad‘s page. Either he removed it, or it didn’t exist. Twitterverse is going to town with it though.

Still, it pays to be a bit careful. You never know who’s reading what you put online and what the consequences can be.

Now, if only I will practice what I preach.

What if it’s someone else posing as you online? What if somebody is out to ruin your career by making you look bad to employers?
