RIP: Harold Pinter

I just got home from one of the best Christmas parties I’ve ever been. I sacrificed a whole bottle of vodka, but it was worth it.

Still, coming home, heading online and finding news like this is never good.

I just read that Harold Pinter, playwright extraordinaire (and Nobel Prize winner) Harold Pinter has succumbed to cancer at the age of 78. He has been living with the cancer since 2002.

Pinter was known as the definitive playwright of this generation - and many of his plays have been staged in Kuala Lumpur even. I haven’t had the chance of performing in any of them but his impact on the performing arts as a whole is beyond calculation.

Here is the first story I read about it. The New York Times has a nice obituary too.

Rest in peace.

Opening tonight: A Christmas Carol!

Today’s the day folks!

A Christmas Carol, the show that I have been spending so much of the past two months rehearsing for, opens tonight at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. There’s isn’t much left that I haven’t said of it, so I’ll just say - please come watch!

In costume

I’ve had this image of me in costume hidden in my mailbox for the longest time - it was a publicity photo taken (except no one wanted to publish it heh heh) - so I thought I’d share it here since it hasn’t been used before. I don’t make it a habit of publishing my own shots here, but this is me in costume so - yeah, whatever. It’s my blog. :P

Hope to see you guys there.

Run is from tonight until Dec 28 - no shows on Monday and Christmas Eve. Sunday 3pm matinee only, all other shows 8.30pm. Call 03 4047 9000 to get your tickets.

p/s I promise that I won’t write that much about the show from now on (well, maybe the odd-occasion) and get back to my regular blogging and rantings!

One week to go

I meant to post this a little earlier today but got busy with work and a wedding tonight that I was emceeing. I’m home now and thought, it’s a couple of minutes before midnight so I can still update it.

Well, remember how I talked about A Christmas Carol - the play I am going to be in soon - and that I said you’ll never hear the last of it?

I meant it. I won’t say much except that it’s exactly a week before we open - Dec 12 (and runs to Dec 28). So I thought I’d share the video from the press preview we did a couple of weeks ago.

I hope you enjoyed it and will come watch. You can call 03 4047 9000 to get your tickets.

See you there! And wish me luck!

Singing Christmas Carols

I just realised what a bad headline that is for this post considering the fact that I can’t imagine who in their right mind will pay to hear me sing!

Well, I will be on stage come December, in a show called A Christmas Carol (ye olde story of Scrooge and the three Spirits, yes) and contraty to public belief, it is not a musical! Yes, of course there wil be Christmas carols, but I will be lip-syncing am not singing lah.

Anyway, the reason why I am writing about this today is because in exactly one month - Dec 12 - the show opens at KLpac. So, in honour of the one month countdown, I want to share with you the trailer for the show (look out for my name, blink and you’ll miss it tho!).

Please spread this video around as it would be nice to share the Christmas spirit (no pun intended) with everyone. I will update more about the show as the dates come closer.

Kurang Manis, a little bit

About a week ago, I plugged on this blog, Instant Cafe Kurang Manis, the first comedy revue from the Instant Cafe Theatre in four years. I told everyone to go watch it - because of a few reasons:

1. It was so good to see them back.

2. I rather enjoyed it (save for some parts, wait for it …)

3. I believe that political satire is so important.

Of course, I had some reservations. It wasn’t their best performance by a long shot, to be upfront about it. But in my post, I also refrained from reviewing it, as I was doing one for The Star.

Well, the article came out today. You can read it here.

I don’t know if mine is a popular view but I did receive an email this morning related to it from a friend.

I got the impression that she liked my piece but also saw fit to remind me that during the Mahathir administration, that there were no arrest (to our knowledge) of any ICT players, and that the Tun himself had attended several of the shows. I assumed that it was in relation to my commentin my review that there are more open democratic spaces under the Abdullah administration. Duly noted.

More significantly though (the actual reason for my rambling in this post), was a term she used with regards to my comment that due to the open spaces, and technology, there are little original jokes and ideas out there these days when it comes to politics and our politicians.

She called it “Forward Click”. I’ve never heard that before, and I am truly excited. And the more I think about it, that is the best way to describe the environment we currently live in - it’s a Forward Click world out there!

Don’t you think so?
