All about Twestival KL

Events

A couple of months ago, Hui Ling sent me a message on Twitter asking me if I knew about Twestival and if I was keen on organising one in KL.

I had to admit that I knew little about it. I mean, I heard about what they did in February – mobilising all the Twitter users globally to come together for one cause – but I had not details. So I did a bit of research (okay, so I just did a Google search!) and was totally intrigued.

Except that I was quite very the busy.

I told her I was interested but really didn’t much for a while. Then last month, I spoke to David Lian (Ling told me she had messaged him too) and we were keen to do something. “I’m interested in anything to do with Twitter,” I believe were David’s exact words. :)

Cut the long story short and here we are, barely 10 days from KL’s first Twestival after recruiting a few more people to the organising committee. We will be organising a massive Tweet-up (I believe it will be the biggest to date in Kuala Lumpur) at Mist Club Bangsar on Sept 12. There will be food, drinks, music and lots of new friends (not to mention goodie bags, lucky draws and auctions – if our plans go right).

Best of all, it is all in the name of charity.

When we were planning to do this, I posted a message on Facebook asking if anyone had suggestions of homes. We had a few here and there, but one stood out. This place is Destiny Starting Point (thanks to Sharon Nelson for the suggestion). The home is for young delinquent kids, and I was told that because of the stigma attached, they rarely get any support. In fact, not too long ago, their water supply got cut because they couldn’t afford to pay for utilities.

Now, I’d like to encourage as many of you (especially Twitterers) to come by for the Twestival!

Entry is by minimum donation of RM30 if you collect your invites at least one day before (or RM40 at the door) but I’d ask that you donate more. Every sen – yes, 100% of proceeds – go to charity. Anything you get on that night is totally sponsored! Thanks to our many sponsors.

You can get details on how to get your invitations here. But here’s a quick tip. Register below.

Then head over to Text 100 Malaysia’s office in Mid Valley (address here) to collect your invites (and er, pay).

Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday!

I can’t believe those kids don’t get help! Delinquency is a sympton. They just need ppl to believe in them.

  2. Niki, you are my hero! I cannot believe you helped make this happen! Any little bit will help, but this is amazing!

@Erin: You know, I didn’t even know this dimension existed until my friend Devan brought this home to my attention. When I visited, I realised that it’s so hard to raise $ because they’re seen as bad eggs, kids who have make their own beds. They’re not “innocent” victims, or “deserving” poor, if you like.

It’s an uphill trudge for the couple running the home, but they’re awfully calm and cheery about it.

I hope I meet you at the event, Erin.

Erin: Yes! Everyone deserves a second (sometimes third!) chance. :)

Sharon: I am happy to help. :) But yes, response to Twestival has been overwhelming to say the least. And we’ve got more stuff up our sleeves. I’m optimistic that we’ll be getting quite some stuff for the home *fingers crossed*

  4. [...] all is good because Twestival, as I blogged about last week, is for charity. The beneficiary home? Destiny Starting Point in Klang, a home for delinquents. Our [...]
