Facebook is the new porn
Sep 17, 2008 Sounds Like Pop
Who would have thought?
Reuters has reported that a “web guru” has analysed information for over 10 million web users and found that social networking sites are dethroning pornography as the most popular online “activity”.
The article quotes the author, Bill Tancer, from his book Click: What Millions of People are Doing Online and Why It Matters.
“As social networking traffic has increased, visits to porn sites have decreased,” said Tancer, indicated that the 18-24 year old age group particularly was searching less for porn.
“My theory is that young users spend so much time on social networks that they don’t have time to look at adult sites.”
Of course, there are many other findings and Tancer also talks about the way people are communicating online now. Obviously, these social networking sites like Facebook, for one, is influencing it. I would love to get a copy of the book.
This news bit has also reminded me of a song from the musical Avenue Q, which I have spoken before. They have a song titled The Internet Is For Porn, and it goes something like this:
KATE: Trekkie!
TREKKIE: The Internet is for porn!
KATE: Noooo…
TREKKIE: The Internet if for porn!
KATE: Trekkie.
TREKKIE: Me up all night honking me horn to porn, porn, porn!
Hahaha :) Maybe now someone can write a song called The Internet is for Facebook?

1.30am, Sept 17. All is well.
Sep 17, 2008 Rantings
March 8 changed the political landscape of Malaysia.
Sept 16 promised a new Government.
It is now Sept 17. Not much has changed.
When will all the political games end, and when will anyone start focusing on those who voted for the politicians in the first place?

I am a bad driver
Sep 15, 2008 Rantings
But I am quite the FuelSaver.
Yes, it’s true. Last week, the main entrance of Menara Star where I work was buzzing because they brought a computer game into the office. Well, actually it’s a driving simulator but it looked like one of those Daytona arcade machines.
Except that there was someone jaga-ing the machine and we weren’t allowed to speed.
It was a Shell FuelSave Simulator which is supposed to test how well you drive, and how much fuel you waste based on the speed you drive at and the amount of times you have to change gear, among others.
As the area where I sit was only 10 feet away from the machine, I tried it three times.
Not once did I finish the course. Sigh.
The first time I went, I did quite well. I probably went empty on the tank with about 50 metres to go. And my FuelSave index was between Medium and High, which is good apparently. The second time, however, I had sort of an, umm, accident. Stupid lorry rammed into me from the back. The third time, I mati enjin at a traffic light. I missed it by like 5 metres! Grr!
So, I never finished any of the drives. Two times I mati enjin, and one accident!
I wanted to go do it once more before they left, but never made it. Now I have to run around town to stalk them. Grr.
Good thing it’s not 100% reflective of my driving skills. Or else I think I’d lose my drivers license kot.

A bit more politics
Sep 15, 2008 News Breaks
I know, I know … and I’m sorry. But considering the political climate currently, it’s hard not to blog about it. Especially when it’s quite exciting times.
Today, de facto Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim has tendered his resignation, The Star reports. He was widely quoted today speaking out against the way the ISA was used late last week. I personally think it’s great that someone is willing to take a stand - and stick to it.
Also, one of the ISA detainees from last Friday, Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, has written about her experience which is available here. She ends with a call for the release of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, echoing the voices of many people, yours truly included.

The Bangsar Boy: Beyond politics
Sep 13, 2008 The Bangsar Boy
My The Bangsar Boy article this week is headlined:
We are still Malaysians at heart.
The print edition has an extra sub-heading, which reads:
Politics has no effect on most people
Well, kinda. I didn’t write the sub-head but I suppose the intention of my article in today’s The StarMetro was to say that life still goes on, despite the political climate, and that it can go on because it has been going on for the longest time now.
I observed:
It is probably not an exaggeration to say that emotions were extremely high, yet actions and behaviours have remained relatively, well, ordinary.
And for good reason too. I truly believe that at the core of things, citizens of our country have been living as, well, Malaysians, and the stereotype (although it’s a good one to have, mind you) of multi-racialism and multi-culturalism came about from this fact.
