Okay, just so you know, I’m all for a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-multi society.
But I really don’t get 1Malaysia.
I mean, sure, harmony between different races blah blah blah is all well and good, but haven’t we achieved that a long time ago? And yes, sure, there are many out there who are becoming increasingly racists and polarisation is rife. Still, I don’t see how a motto will get us anywhere.
After all, isn’t it really the people’s mindset that you need to work on. Doesn’t that happen through education?
So, when I was at an event a few days ago and a minister who was making a speech said: “Salam Sejahtera and Salam 1Malaysia”, I was like, “WTF?”
What does “Salam 1Malaysia” mean anyway? Best 1Malaysia Wishes? Eh?
Never mind that even, this whole 1whatever has become so “iconic” that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. Okay lah, I can understand Ministries doing it. After all, it’s the motto of the Prime Minister. But what I saw in today’s paper takes the cake – 1Toilet.
Say what?
Yup, you read it right. The Terengganu state Government has introduced this, in line with the “oneness” concept of 1Malaysia. The article, in today’s The Star, reads:
The state government will introduce a “1Toilet” policy in a move to liberalise education, where teachers – and even principals – will soon have to share toilets with their students.
State Education, Higher Learning, Human Resource, Science and Technology Committee chairman Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said the policy was mooted in line with the 1Malaysia concept, and teachers and students could have a feeling of “oneness”.
“We want students to have a sense of belonging that we believe would inspire them to excel further in their education.
“When students share the toilets with the teacher, they (students) will believe that they are on par with academicians and this automatically invokes a sense of being important to an organisation, which, in this case, is the school,” he said here yesterday.
Methinks that members of the State Government has had 1drink too many (figure of speech yeah, I don’t mean literally. Heaven forbid they kena rotan).
Which nutcase came up with this brilliant idea (1slap I give you!)? I think sharing a toilet with the teacher won’t help a student excel in his or her studies, proper teaching will!
What’s the heck is going on? Are we going to have to start eating 1ton mee after this? Or only listen to 1Buck Short? Or are we going to get people registering names like 1Sharina for birth certificates?
I say forget the slogans, forget the bandwagon. Forget to politicking and get down to the issues (like actually liberalising the education system, for example). Now that would be 1derful.

Sharing toilet with students are nightmare… Just imagine how students treat their toilet. Poor teachers and principals.
*Giggling* Sure is a funny news. Things of these people can think of, is quite incredible.
1Toilet? Now that is something new aye. :p
(this comment sort of goes off on a tangent a bit)
hahahaha i think in some extrapatriotic conservative circles, “salam [insert random concept]” is sort of like a trend, i’ve heard of something even more ridiculous but i can’t for the life of me remember what it was, probably something like “salam makan” or “salam facebook” or something. i cant tell you how extremely tempting it is to parody it on some people sometimes, but i suppose every subcommunity needs their own catchphrase/slang/in thing. i just really find its use too cheesy tho, not to mention the fact that anything besides “salam alaikum” and “salam sejahtera” not even making proper sense.
on 1toilet… hehe oh well im all for egalitarianism lol
hahahaha! that was funny alrite
Let’s go celebrate at 1utama!
Jessen: Well, proper education should include hygiene I suppose. heh
Swee Ping: I’m sure there’s more where all these ideas came from!
tekkaus: Wonder what’s next!
Atif: Salam…
lionel: Oh, how did I miss 1Utama? They must be visionaries, coming up with the concept earlier than others!
You do realise that this is going to make the teachers who like getting down and dirty with their students very very happy… and we don’t need to be racially aware to know who like that sort of thing…
[...] This is great news and something I, together with most Malaysians I’m sure, welcome wholeheartedly. I suppose this is “in line” with the PM’s 1Malaysia concept (although I have a few things to say about that, and have in a previous blog post). [...]
I’m shocked by this 1toilet thing!
